Non working AF

Someone has any idea where is it more likely that the problem lies when a AF is not working fine? The body or the lens? This is an early Nikon AF model (N series) that only focuses at close distances.

I would tend to suspect the body. On most modern cameras that is where the AF motor and sensors are.
