Noob needs help with taking a pic with a canon G9

Stand really far away, and keep it at f/2.8, focus on something in front of the bike, about 2/3rds between you and the bike. This should put your bike at the tail end of the objects in focus of the image. Then crop it once you get it on your computer.

Or I could not of understood what I read a few weeks ago, but its worth a shot.

I was able to get super nice bokeh with my S3IS while zoomed in, but it was of a bird that was roughly 3 ft away, and then the background was a bridge roughly a foot ball field behind it. In that garage shot, the background is just way too close to the bike to get out of the DOF

Does that mean the G9 is not quite capable of the task at hand?
Should i put it on Ebay and get a D40?

That's not what I'm saying..... simply pointing out certain limitations in certain cameras that you should be aware of. The G9 is certainly a capable camera.

isn't this backwards?

The distance between you and the subject also impacts DOF. The farther away the subject distance the great DOF which is opposite of what the OP is attempting to achieve.

hmm I am jumping in late but I would say - based on the shots you showed earlier - that you need more distance between your subject and the background.
Also, if you do decided to follow the photoshop line then try out this method:

scroll to the bottom - I know its for wildlife, but the same technique can be applied. Note if you are using elements and don't have a layer mask use this download:

Yeah it is a nice pic of the bike. The only distraction I see id the white collum to the right. Nice JAWA by the way I have one that I havent ridden in 20 years.
