Yours is the non program AE-1. The AE-1 Program has a PROGRAM setting on the dial on the top of the camera and it says PROGRAM under the AE-1 label on the front of the camera.

Here's some pics of the F1 I've been playing with. I have to say this thing is pretty cool. I can't figure out which version it is or when it was made. It's certainly a beast. Am I missing the standard button on the top? Can I pick one up somewhere for a non astronomical price? Is there anyway to remove the motor components for just normal use?

I do plan on taking some shots at the track on my friends on their motorcycles. I'm sure this cam would be capable but I'm not sure of the settings or color film I should use for fast paced motorcycle shots. I may be getting ahead of myself here but just want to know what direction to research in.

Ah, that is the New F-1 ... not the original.
Great camera. I cried when I sold mine ... had it for 15 years.
I consider it the best camera Canon ever made.

The shutter release button is missing.
If you keep the motor drive attached, you can use the shutter button on it.

The New F-1 is normally a full manual exposure camera.
With the AE Head (viewfinder) you can do Aperture Priority (select the lens aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed).
With the Motor Drive/Winder you can do Shutter Priority (select the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture ... same as your AE-1).

I have never taken the top plate apart ... so I cannot say if you can easily fix the shutter release button (if you can find the part).

I would get it repaired by a Camera Repair shop.

Ok. Thanks for your help with all this. Owe you a pint. From what I've been reading it looks like the new F1 was the first camera to give Canon official street cred against Nikon. I've personally been partial to Canon (digital up until now) with a G5 and a G9, great point and shoot. Probably because my father always said they he always liked them better than Nikons and that Time magazine gave all their photographers Nikons which is why everyone is on that bandwagon.

So in keeping my thread alive to show my progression I thought I'd share my most recent pics. I'm not so happy with them. I thought I had my settings right, bought some good film, but am still getting some grainy images. For all theses pictures I used Kodak gold 100. The aperture was set at auto, Film speed at 100 and a 125 shutter speed. All criticism is taken constructively. Thanks for taking a look.

Macro 50mm 1:3.5, I swear I had this lined up perfectly, maybe my camera is off?
