But I found an instance of a camera/lens that was saved from damage by having a filter on it.

No. I just recall a request (not to me specifically, however) to provide an instance of where a dropped camera was saved by a filter.

There's a few rough spots around the edges, but that glass in the middle is amazing. You'd hardly know it was there. Obviously a very high quality filter. ;-)

Neither link proves anything because there is no clear evidence that the lens would have broken without the filter. It might have done, but there is no proof. The only way to really demonstrate that a filter saved your lens would be to replicate the fall without the filter, if the lens is damaged the second time, then the filter saved it the first time. It would be a somewhat hollow victory.

^This, and the circumstances of the second fall without the filter would have to recreated perfectly for the test to be valid.

I'm tired of reading about this debate...(unless people are actually gonna start fighting about it lol)

The only protection you ever need for your lens is..... Common Sense.

If you drop it...more fool you, should have been more carefull.

Lenses ARE saved by filters from time to time. This despite the vehement insistence from some here that it is categorically impossible for it to happen. I have personally had one lens saved from what I am convinced would have been serious damage because I had a filter on it. It's the reason that I personally choose to use filters on most of my lenses. It's a personal choice, and if I feel that a filter is degrading an image all I have to do is unscrew the filter.

And that's all I have to say on the matter.
