So I'm not really sure this is the appropriate place to post this, or what kind of help you all may offer, but I like this forum, so I'll post it here.

So I'm a student in college, and I have a student loan through the lending firm Nelnet, and I make regular monthly payments on my loan, that I always have go through on the 1st of each month.

Well I had just made a payment of $100 on 3/1/16, and my payment history on Nelnet reflects this payment. However, my bank shows a charge of $100 on 3/1/16, and another charge of $100 on 3/2/16. This second charge I did not authorize, so Nelnet took money out of my bank account and has no record of doing so on their website when I log in.

Is there anything I can do to them, because they took money out of my account without my authorization, which, is illegal.

I will obviously ask for a refund, but is there something more that I can do to Nelnet?

Never heard of them, and I don't know anything about student loans, but did you call and talk to someone there? I'm wondering if it could have been a computer glitch and would be something they could correct.

(Maybe leap day messed up things?? I dunno.)

Talk to your bank ASAP.

Talk to Nelnet ASAP.

Follow up with a letter and cc both.

This has happened to me with another company. They apparently had a crook working there who was stealing from the company and double-charging customers to cover it.

Inform your bank and ask them to do a swift trace on the second charge which will document where the money went

I worked for a Collections Agency once (did regular payments, collections and legal) but I was in IT so I was involved in all facets.

Even with safeguards there are people who like to use the account numbers they get for their own wealth building.

So, as mentioned above, Contact everyone immediately.
And when you call in to the Nelnet, talk to a Supervisor and/or someone in the legal department if you can. DO NOT talk to a regular support person as you do not know if that person could be related to the 2nd $100 incident directly or indirectly.

Inform your bank immediately of the 2nd withdrawal that should not have happened. Tell them you are working with the Nelnet to resolve the issue and provide them Nelnet contact information. But informing them immediately will let you follow up with them.

Banks lately seem to have written in the small print that they are not responsible for misc. charges after 30 days if they are not notified within that 30 days of the transaction.

Thank you for all of the feedback, I did talk to Nelnet just a regular agent, on Friday, and they weren't much help at all. I then talked to my bank and filed a claim, and they are going to investigate the second charge.

I also had such a case.

It is an old thread, but ok. Anyway, reading here reminded me of the problems I had with a loan I took a long time ago. I was so sorry that I got into this and I couldn't go out already, but I couldn't change anything. For this reason, when I took another loan I did everything differently and correctly so that I would have no more problems. What I changed was that I turned to Mortgage Advisor Hull and the specialists there analyzed everything and helped me so that this experience I remember as a positive one.
