Not quite ice fishing

My girlfriend was nice enough to let me drag her fishing at 14 degrees F. Critique is welcome. I'm a rank amateur when it comes to people. Both have been processed in LR.

Brush tool used on an under-exposed subject. Small corrections to white balance.

Her warm smile and happy look make the second one very appealing. The first is a nice enough image, but isn't as strong as it could be due to the exposure. Both the tone and exposure of her jacket cause them to blend in to the background, and her face is at least 1/2 stop darker than the jacket; since the human eye is always attracted to light over dark, this means that we really don't see her face in the first one. You could pull some more exposure out in LR using the selective enhancement tool, but the best way would have been a little bit of fill-flash at time of shooting.

Do you think I'd have been able to get enough fill from the built-in flash, or would this have needed an off camera flash? Almost zero flash experience over here.

While OCF is almost always better, I think a little squirt of pop-up flash would have helped greatly.

I was trying to avoid over-doing this the first time around in LR, but I see your point. I think I'll take another stab at this one and come back with my results.

I know that pop up flash is usually "bad", but I guess I need to work on recognizing the scenarios where it's better than no flash at all. Thanks for the comments!
