Another government boondoggle, they were introduced to this country in the 30s as a fur source and have since grown to invasive species status. Most of the states with marshland infestations have instituted a bounty of anywhere from $5-$6 per tail.

Another government boondoggle…

That was possibly the last shot of that fellow since the Jaegermeister
will trap them all before winter. A breeding couple is taken to a body
of water 6 km upstream and left in peace. Three years later, they will
repeat.

The Nutria is very useful in an environment but, like many other things,
too many is not so good. They nest in self-made tunnels close to water
surface and that will damage river banks. Population control is key.

Not of aggressive nature, children and fauna don't have much to fear
from the Nutria who is very much fun to observe by all… except swans.
 
Nice shot! Yep, they are invasive around here, too. Some folks eat them, especially in Cajun country.
