I've shot a few portraits with this lighting setup in the past and thought they came out pretty well. This was actually just a test shot I took to get the exposure right but turned out to be my favorite... What is everyone's opinion on the B&W conversion? How about the shadow on the wall... Is it too harsh? Opinions on the overall lighting? Camera setting were: F/8, 1/250, ISO 200. Lighting is just a SB-600 at full power into a 44" umbrella camera right. I had a 20" x 30" white foam board just off camera to the right of her to provide just a bit of bounce.

It would have been nice if she were away from the backdrop. THe lighting is very nice. The conversion looks great. Portrait orientation would have been a bit more appropriate here.

I wonder if the lighting might have been a little better if the reflector had been camera left.

Also, if you knew before she turned her face downward then the main light could have been placed a little lower relative to her face.

I agree that the model should have been farther away from the backdrop.

Horizontal format is fine providing you crop some from the right side. About an inch should do it.

I read that as a white foam board to the right of her (which would be camera left and logically make sense as fill). With that said just a touch more fill (bounce from the camera left) would be nice. I don't mind the landscape orientation as the guitar fills the frame a bit. Interesting photo though, I like it.

Reminds me of the cover of the album "Texas Flood". I like the look of the sweet little girl and her uke and the way shes looking at it like shes "contemplating" making it wail. Over all the pic has a great feel to it. I even like the "graffiti". It's like we are seeing the moment when she put down the crayons and picked up her first axe. I happen to like the shadow. It gives the picture depth

Yes, I explained that poorly... The foam board is to the left of the camera. It's against the wall and angled to provide just a little bit of extra light onto her face.

Thanks... You described the vibe behind this photo perfectly. I was wondering if anyone would notice the crayons on the wall. Strangely, I wish I hadn't scrubbed most of them off several weeks ago because it would have made for a nice toddler graffiti backdrop.

I shot in landscape orientation because my original idea for this was to have her holding the uke straight out toward the camera. She tends to make very silly faces when you point a camera at her so getting this "serious" facial expression was pure luck.

Print and hang it. Very nicely done.

YES!!!!!!!!!!! I like it JUST the way it is. Horizontal is cute here--I love her little ink doodle on the wall!!! Adorable shot. GOOD lighting! Nice b&w conversion also. "future rock star!"
