Sorry to go backward. But how do you back up Contacts with a Galaxy S4 on your desktop and elsewhere? I use to back up using Verizon, my service provider for th S4, but I've had nothing but problems with it for months.

Do you need to update the software on your computer? When I had a Windows phone way back when, I remember it having proprietary software that would need to be updated periodically.

Wow, I don't understand that thought process. I've had multiple iPhones, iMac, Macbook, etc. They are nice, but far from perfect.

Updated my Samsing Galaxy S5 the other day, and tonight I hook it up to my computer. It tells me most of the directories on my phone are empty.

So I check them on the phone, and all the files are still there. So what did the last Android update mess up now, and how do I fix it?

what directories? like for images and such?

I haven't looked at mine on the computer since the last firmware update.

can we start a thread about how much better the SG5 camera is over the iphone?

What are you trying to do with your phone on the computer that can't be done on the phone? Let's start there. Because I want to help you with what you are trying to accomplish. If you're going about it the wrong or hard way why would we want to chase around a potential non-issue?

I haven't connected my phone to a computer in a long time since there really isn't a need to, but as I recall there are multiple ways to mount the phone. When you plug in the phone there may be a notification with the different options such as Media Device, Mass Storage Device, MTP, something along those line.

Try switching that and see if it helps out.

Stay away from the Verizon apps. They just proprietary BS to try and keep people in their eco-system. I literally disable or remove all the Verizon apps.

Now on to your question. Strong chance they are already all backed up. What I suggest is to login into your gmail account on a desktop, and right above the Compose button will be a drop down menu that says GMail. Click that and flip over to your Contacts. Hopefully your contacts will already be there. If not, it is likely because you opted for them not to be backed up to google at some point.

Restoring the phone to a previous state is useless. It will simply update again, and I'd be back to where I am now.

Yes, I could email it to myself, or send it to Dropbox, or a myriad of other slow, laborious multi-step methods. Dragging & dropping is the most efficient.

But the directories and subdirectories will appear. Just no files in them. In some subdirectories, SOME of the files will show. For instance, my music file. None of the MP3s appear on the computer, but all the cover art does.

I've tried USB Debugging. I've tried installing Kies. I've tried revoking the computer's debugging authorization and making the computer re-install the drivers.

Whatever the issue is, it's most likely in the computer.

My guess would have been reinstalling the drivers for the phone. Since you've already done that, I can't offer much else. Good luck!

Which is exactly why I suggested Kies. Kies 3 is Samsungs app for the S4 and later.
