Hey guys, i wrote a few days ago about getting a lense adapter thing.
Ive got out all the old lenses, there are heaps lenses and stuff here, but its all older and for a nikon. I dont know how to find what out what type of lenses they are or what mounting they have on them to get the converter thing... Any help to solve this would be awesome!!!

Ok, the camera is a Nikon F3, there is another that just says Nikon F. Know anything about these or the lens mounting point???

Those are both beastly professional 35mm film camera bodies. The mount is the same as all Nikon mounts, F-mount.

I'm guessing you have a newer Canon digital? You didn't say..
You can adapt older Nikon lenses to EOS/ef mount. I've done it for a few of my Nikon lenses. I like cheap photodiox adapters.. they work fine and cost like 10-15 $.

If you shoot a Nikon, you can mount them right up to the newer Nikon DSLRs.. at least I'm 99% sure of that.

Ive got a canon 500D, so yea, newer. I read somewhere that you have to be careful sometimes mounting old lenses onto newer cameras? Anyone know what that is about??

That's a vague warning... doesn't really apply to your situation.

Just use this:
Amazon.com: Fotodiox V2. Lens Mount Adapter, Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Camera Adapter, for Canon EOS 1d,1ds,Mark II, III, IV, 5D, Mark II, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, Digital Rebel xt, xti, xs, xsi, t1i, t2i, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 1

And it'll mount up nice and focus perfectly to infinity.
It's what I use to mount my manual focus Nikon/Nikkor lenses to my T2i/550D.

What lenses do you have? Maybe a 50mm f/1.4 - they came with the F3's as an option I think. That'd be a nice score - they still sell for $150 if they're really clean. I bet there's a 135mm f/2.8 in your possession now as well.

"You should not try to mount non-AI (Auto Indexing) Lenses any DSLR models other D40, D40X or D60 or you'll risk damaging the camera and/or lens. You can have non-AI lenses converted to AI."
Thats the thing i read, does that only apply if you are mounting it directly onto a nikon body??? Also, ive only got 3 lenses here, apparently we have another bag full stored away. There is a..
Nikkor Auto 85mm 1:1.8
Nikkor zoom 28-85mm 1:3.5~4.5
Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8
Ill find out the others tomorrow when we get them out.. Going to be fun if i can get them onto my camera!!! Itll save me buying some different lenses!!

That 85 f1.8 will be really nice for portraits. So will the 50mm. Are there any letters after the numbers?

I dont think there are any letters, ill have a better look tomorrow when im properly awake. Im getting the rest of the lenses tomorrow... So ill see what else we have!

I'd be selling your canon gear and going for a decent nikon body, The f3 is a great film camera and if you have a bag of pro Nikon lens you need nothing else, the majority will mount to any nikon camera but I'd be getting one with the lens motor in the body. H

For now ill just try using those adaptor things. So there wont be any harm putting it onto a new camera?

No there wont be any harm, but there are a couple really nice Nikon lenses there, and if you're getting more there may be even more really nice ones. I would agree that you should switch bodies, but in this case if your lenses are pretty old then you wouldn't get any features on a Nikon body that you wont get on a Canon with the adapter.

What is this non-auto index thing this person was on about and is it applicable to me?
Some of the lenses are around 30 or more years old.. So for now at least ill settle with adapting them to my canon.

OK! I got the rest of the lenses out!!! There are heaps of filters, a close up one, polarised, close up, organe filter, "Hoya special effect filter", another orange, diffusion filter and another close up. Most of them nikon, others hoya.
There are a few nikkor ones and a tokina. They look good, got a wide angle, macro i think. Hopefully i can use them...
And there were some lense hoods. I saw a bit about the Auto AI thing mentioned, the nikon F3 book said that the lenses had to have auto AI, so im feeling good about it!!!

Ok, so all of the lenses are non-AI. Does the adaptor fix that problem??
