Ok, I'm actually a bit embarrassed to ask this, but the answer wasn't in a sticky. :blushing:

When you say '100% crop', what does it mean? To me, that would mean an uncropped image (100% of the original image). Is that what it means, or is it like a secret handshake, and I'm not there yet?

A 100% crop means a crop taken from a photo sized at 100% (ie fullsized). The idea is that instead of having to upload and host a fullsized image (which can be very large) the person simply sizes the image to fullsize on their computer, then crops out a section of that photo which can then up uploaded to the net.

The primary reason is that sometimes its hard to show things such as softness of smaller details or noise on images resized for the net; and further many people don't want to upload fullsized versions of their photos to the net; thus the 100% crop is used.

Ok, so... they display it on their screen at full size (ie 3456x2304), crop a small section of the image (let's say 200x300), and upload the small section for the web. This is not the same as resizing, correct? I don't know why I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around this.

and yes its different to resizing because the section they cut out they upload without further resizing. Thus other people can see the 100% view of the photo (ie with no resizing at any stage) without the whole photo having to appear. Normally people will select a key point of interest relevant to their question (eg they might show an in-focus point to show focus problems or overall quality; or they could show a totally out of focus part to show noise levels) .
