Title: On Edge

mountain-goat-22.jpg

Location & Date: Goat Lick, Glacier National Park | July 2013

Camera Set-Up: Nikon D800 w/ Nikon 300 2.8 and 1.4 teleconverter

Shutter Speed: 1/400

Aperture: 5.6

ISO: 1600

Note:

The official location for watching mountain goats at Glacier’s goat lick on Hwy 2 is an old platform with bad sight lines. But the highway’s bridge by the goat lick turn-off is exceptional for photography. And by bridge, I mean the steep cliffs underneath the highway, where you carefully walk/crawl into a position on a steep hill/cliff and struggle to point your camera across to the only slightly steeper/goat friendly side of the gorge. Did I mention the bugs are bad? It is not a location for the faint of heart. In fact, it’s not a location I will likely ever visit again, as I still have reoccurring nightmares from that shoot. Nonetheless, I recently re-discovered this image and love it, as it perfectly illustrates the amazingness of goats: Hanging out calmly on the side of a cliff (while not laughing at the human freaking out across the way).
