The second one is much better. I do like that it is just one half of the subject but maybe a little more of the body would enhance the shot instead of the just the neck up, only a suggestion though

I am going to be nitpicky with the second image. Lose the fold in the background - it's distracting. And, if he is going to have a cigarette in his hand/mouth, have it lit. It just sort looks odd the way it is - like he's just sucking air.
