Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
Recently my dog Brutus (the Sheppard mix) and a friends dog Molly (the Golden) had a romp in the back yard. A few of these were shot without a flash in dim light. Needless to say I had to edit them a bit. As Photoshop is not one of my strong points so I need some feedback on what I did right and wrong etc. Thanks in advance for taking a look at these and commenting. If you feel like editing them go right ahead. Mostly I just cropped, fixed the color and saturation where appropriate.

A few of these looked much better on my computer. The lighting didn't quite turn out right. Thanks again for the C&C.

I would love to see them but am not sure if it is just me or my computer, but they dont show up. :(

Well I guess that didn't go so well. Here's another try.

Nope it was my computer too. I took them from my photostream on Flickr and the structure of the URL looked about the same as the one in the tutorial.

None of them appear to be in focus. The shutter speed was probably too low as well, since there seems to be some motion blur. None of these have anything to offer compositionally. It's often times best to capture animals on their own level. Next time, take a knee and shoot some photos.

not trying to hijack your thread, but i took this one of my parents dog yesterday, I tried to make it like a portrait of him, no pp done at all, it's very hard to work with dogs as they dont' follow commands like smile or turn that way. It's especially hard to get my dog from the floor level because if I sit on the floor he immediatly moves to come over for a cuddle, also...he's too big, it would be like sitting on the floor and taking a picture of an 8 yr old. lol
This is a crooked...but here is lucky

and here I cut the end of his tail off ...and ^^^ there too. oops.

like Tyler said...if you get on the level with the dog...better results...here is my dog Trooper but I took them sitting on the couch, he is very tall, so I have to sit in a chair if I want head shots of him, his shoulders reach a little above my hips.

Here he is laying down with my kids.

blurry..but I just took it because I think its funny that the dog watches America's funniest home videos with my kids..lol

Dogs are hard to catch! I'm a petsitter, and photograph my clients a lot. A few things you want to watch for: try to make sure you are not cutting off legs or other body parts when you can. It's harder to do with pets since they are moving around. There are also times you want a "portrait" style where just having their head/top of torso makes sense.

Also, I almost always shoot in shutter priority with animals since I want to make sure I get the least amount of blur possible. Focus on the eyes, and unless you are using an off camera flash, I wouldn't shoot with one. Their eyes will ALWAYS have red or green if you do this. Natural light is best, and I carry treats and squeaky toys! ;)

Here are a couple examples I have shot for clients:

This one isn't tightly cropped b/c I wanted the dog in the back to show b/c they were playing, but it's an example of freezing the motion with a faster shutter speed:

BTW, I find cats much easier to shoot than dogs b/c they are interested in the camera. Dogs just want to jump all over you and lick it. LOL

and example of a shot I loved, but messed up by cutting off part of the kitty. I could crop it, I suppose to make it look better, but LOVED the colors and the way the kitty looked.

Yes, I used to give them as gifts, now that I feel I've gained some experience, I've started charging, but I still shoot them just for fun. (most people don't want to pay for shots of their animals out here anyway)

The boxer in the background is my dog, I brought him over to a client's house for a playdate. I've got LOTS of smushy face pics! (but I won't post them here b/c I've hijacked this thread enough! Sorry!)
