Hello, working with a model next Friday and my cousin is bringing his restored Willy's Jeep and wondering what the best method would be for lighting when doing a pinup shoot outside with a vehicle in the shot, the time frame is between 5:30 & 6:30 in the evening.... go for natural light or bring strobes and if strobes are preferred would you use an umbrella or reflector dish with the strobe? Thanks for your help :)

in all seriousness: all of the above.

I'd push it an hour later to get color in the sky. then use natural/unnatural lighting to fill in where needed.

Thanks, yeah would be no problem to go later, that's just the earliest he's able to make it....

For the so-called "natural light" one would have to be lucky to get it just right. Maybe VERY lucky.

Only one choice between an umbrella or reflector dish? Does that mean you have only one strobe? With one strobe you will probably want to use some reflectors to light the places where the flash does not go.

Right now I just have two strobes... and a speedlight

Around 5 to 6 PM, with the camera at 6 o'clock, and the jeep in the center of the clock face, and the setting sun at 10 or 11 o'clock, the sunlight would create a nice, crisp rim lighting effect, and then you could use flash lighting to fill in the darker side of her and the jeep.

You might even think about putting two shoot through umbrellas close together to let the sunlight shine through them, and put her in a little area of diffused light.
