Panarama Shots

I've taken a few panorama shots the number of course varies with the scene, such as the Gran Canyon or the chairs at the OK Memorial site.

What I always seem to have trouble with is recall which sequence of shots applies to the panorama I've taken. I have both a D300 and D700 but have not found a good way of separating those shots. Any ideas?

I always take a shot of my hand over the lens at the end of a series. Easy to spot in post.

Yep I get confused too. To make matters worse I some time shoot 3 each for HDR. Gets out of control!

This is a good trick.

I usually sort by date and time, so usually they'll be seconds apart and easy to group.

Another trick I use, and this won't work for all cameras, is to change file directories. So each set of frames for a pano, HDR or focus stack is recorded in a separate file right on the memory card. I usually have 20 directories set up ahead of time.

Quick tip, if you hold the ? button on a Nikon camera down while turning it on it will advance the folder number on the memory card

Personally I also take a black exposure before and after the sequence so I can easily see the gaps.

Interesting you're right the newer Nikons don't do this. The D70 D80 and D200 did this. My D800 doesn't and I found a reference to someone complaining the D90 doesn't either.
