Turn off all the auto modes on your D5000, and don't use the Monochrome setting to make B&W's. Convert a color photo to B&W using a B&W adjustment layer in your Photoshop Elements 6.

This photo has insufficient contrast, to the point of being 'muddy'.

Clicked all icons and possible combinations in ADJUSTMENT LAYER. Still I cannot make it black and white. Can somebody help me please.
