This is one of those really good ideas that sometimes does not turn out well. Maybe it is just that the camera cannot record all that the eye sees. You needed better shadow or something to make the paw prints stand out more, I think. Maybe strong side lighting. As it stands now, it is difficult to tell the areas of interest from the background.
 
I agree, side lighting would help reveal texture and the paw print. The image also looks slightly OOF.
 
I think what hurts this image is the varying tones and the cracks leading all around that pull the eye when you really want people to look at the foot marks.
If it was closer and simplified so that the only cracks in the field relate to the footprint, then it would be simpler to catch the eye.

OOF = Out of Focus
 
definitely OOF.. what was the original fstop for the stop? that might explain, especially if its not the sharpest fstop on the lens.. try middle ranges usually for the best sharpness.. like f/8 or so..
 
I agree with previous posters, stronger side lighting and tighter comp would really make this one pop
