A few friends and I decided to go downtown Seattle and hand out peanut butter sandwiches to people. Along the way I had the opportunity to talk with a few people, hear their story, and take their picture. I would like some comments on the photos themselves. I haven't really done a whole lot of photography since coming back from my exchange in Korea just because I am a full time student and work a whole lot too.

I plan on doing more, but I also want to improve. These were shot with the 50mm f/1.4D on a D200. Usually I'd shoot with my 35mm 1.8 though, my Mom decided she wanted to give it a try for a while.

Nice, but don't you kiss the chromatic aberrations of the 35 1.8? I sold that lens over it. But I was using it a lot at night which seemed to really bring out the weakness.

So, just so you're aware, the chances are high you are about to create a firestorm. Don't get mad about me telling you this, but homeless exploitation is a huge hot button topic here and people debate it with religious zeal. Not saying that's what you are or aren't doing, but some will interpret it that way. Some just do it to be self righteous, some have legitimate concerns.

Are you talking about the new G? With that one, I find that it's two biggest issues, barrel distortion and CA are near 100% fixed with lens profile adjustments in Aperture.

Yeah, I could fix with light room too. But it just wasn't worth it with the purple fringe around every light in each night shot. I sold it on the craigslist and now use a NIKKOR 24-70 2.8 for everything that 35 did and then some =)

Hmm, in Aperture it just auto corrects upon import unless I tell it not to or undo the change. The only way I even notice is if I look at the picture closely during the period after it imported some pictures but is still importing others and thus hasn't applied the lens correction profile yet.

Just to clear the air, I never once mentioned homeless in either my post here or on my flickr page. I was very careful not to use that term for that reason, because actually some of the people I met weren't homeless at all. I just gave their stories, and I asked if I could have their picture so that I could share their story with my friends and family. We didn't go to hand out peanut butter sandwiches to the homeless, we went to bless others and perform some random act of kindness. We didn't ask if they were homeless and needed a sandwich, we asked almost anyone not on their cellphone or in a conversation if they would like a sandwich.

I appreciate your concern, and I hope this doesn't start any controversy.

Anyways, I have noticed some of the CA in the 35mm though, I just got LR4 so I need to figure out how to correct some of that. I don't have a whole lot of experience with post production because before I got LR I just used Camera Raw to do my edits with Elements.

The glare in the 3rd picture I believe is from the filter I have on the lens. I keep it on to protect the lens (especially since it was lightly raining) but it does that often if there is any light in the picture. I am thinking of picking up a 24mm 2.8D lens because I want something a little wider.

Also, is there any critiques with the photos/edits? I know in the first one I shouldn't have cut off his arm.

Good on you C.l.a.y. ! I like the first shot the most. I think what you did is far from exploitation, and is in fact just being decent. Fjrabon is right...some people really, really "go off on" this topic.

get that filter off your lens!

I think the pictures are good, though 2 is underexposed I think.

Yeah, im going to take the filter off, its a bit annoying. Any experience woth the 24 2.8d?

When i do any "street photography" i shoot in aperature priority so i can get the shot and capture the moment. So i often have to adjust the exposure in post.
