Pentax

I hated the Pentax forum, it's quite boring!

predominantly Canon and Nikon here.

part of the problem... I'd say.

..

Too bad we couldn't be more welcoming...

If you intend on using this camera with legacy manual focus K-mount lenses, I highly recommend trying to pull a little extra for a used K10D. Among other improvements, the K10D is equipped with a penta-prism viewfinder rather than the K100D's Penta-mirror. A bit brighter which results in more comfortable manual focus. I don't have this particular camera but I have demo'd it quite a bit. I like it although by today's standards it is a bit obsolete (even though I'd jump on an equally old K10D if the price is right). Even back in '06, Pentax was a late comer to DSLR market and was playing catch up. Today, they have pretty much caught up and gaining market share in certain corners. Good luck.. I'd provide more details but my time behind the camera is a little foggy.

If a more welcoming place for pentax users is what you seek, I suggest The Largest Pentax Camera & Photography Forum and Review Site - PentaxForums.com Home. IMO, that site is more content rich and organized for pentax, asahi, takumar users and collectors than the TPF.

Or you could spend an extra $100 on the K20D and get a CMOS sensor :)

True, but since the OP was looking at K100D, I figured the K10D was stretching the budget. Putting yet another $100 would probably be stretching too far.

I don't have one, nor have I ever used Pentax. But you asked if anyone had the same camera, and if they had opinions about it. So I answered yes, because I am sure someone else has the camera and/or has an opinion about it.

Hmmm, Im curious. The question was if you had one and if you had any opinions about it. So the answer would be yes if both applied. Since you dont have one I dont see the reason for your answer by answering yes because you dont have one and so couldnt offer a sensible opinion. You should have simply wasted everyones time and answered NO.

The question was "does ANYONE have a Pentax K1000D, or opinions on it". I answered yes, because I am sure that SOMEONE has a Pentax K1000D and/or an opinion on it. The OP didn't post any more information than that. Sorry I wasted .0003s of your life while you read my response.

Well thats .0003s I can never get back.

Clearly, through use of MS Comic Sans, I really don't care. I didn't do anything wrong. I answered the OP's question with the correct answer, "Yes".

The K100D is OK as a 1st bargain basement DSLR, very similar to the old Nikon D40 and D50. Yes, you can find one super cheap now, but why? Save a little more $$ and grab a used K20D, or K-x/K-r and you'll be satisfied far, far longer. Pentax lenses rock!
However, if you do get a Pentax I would suggest you check out pentaxforums.com, as this forum is primarily a Canikon compound (as another poster pointed out, and although the name doesn't suggest that, lol), with only a handfull of us thick-skinned Pentax users aboard.
Or you might simply assimilate and check out the used Canikon market...

Doubtless this is mainly a Canon/Nikon, Nikon/Canon userbase but a lot of multiple users too. I've owned at least twenty makes of camera, including Pentax. I'm sure there's a number of TPF members who can trump that :) (We don't necessarily put it in our sig)

Why's that a problem? Any noob with a Nikon or Canon entry level system that asked the same question would get the same response from myself and most likely O Hey. Your decision of what camera brand you use doesn't dictate your ability to be welcoming as well as your ability to preform a basic search for absolutely basic questions.

Why's that a problem?.

It has a bred a subtle form of group think.

Similar threads have been started but with a more welcoming response. The primary difference, the OP was considering either Nikon or Canon.

Oh, I see what the problem is. I generally ignore those threads because it's noobs recommending gear to noobs. If I wouldn't have, they would have gotten the exact same treatment from me.

Pentax makes some good stuff. I have no problem with them. I have a problem with monotony.

I know I am an equal opportunity (un)informer. If someone else made a post that was sparsely peppered with information about a product. I would have approached it with the same gusto (or lack thereof), regardless of whether it was a Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica, Olympus, etc.

It's true.. He would have lol.

wmfloyd, don't worry about these guys. It's their favorite way to welcome noobs. Many here are very sarcastic and can act like arses but they're good people with a wealth of knowledge. Stick around and work on communicating and if you flub something up and get a smartass comment, just laugh and move on. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks Gary. Some great information!
