#1 Wierd framing! Odd pose! Makes it look really odd. You have some bright highlights that are too bright (not blown, but very distracting). You also some bad facial shadowing.. use a reflector or fill flash! Also a bit soft...

#2 underexposed subject... blown background. Proper use of flash would have fixed both of the these issues. Even a reflector would have helped. She is almost coon eyed. Again, weird pose... framing too tight. Armpits???? Pretty girl, though!

#3 Cute.. reasonably sharp. Bad blow out on his left arm. Good use of DOF / aperture. I do not like the cropping at his right elbow.. makes him look like an amputee! This would have been better vertical with more room, as the background adds nothing but dead space.

Yes, all the framings are too tight and cramped. And the armpits in the second one are really a turnoff like was mentioned above. Definitely time to buy a flash and/or some reflectors.

Actually, I was going for the odd cropping in the 1st and 3rd. Yes, I totally need a reflector! I will be getting one at the end of the month.

No insult intended... it is just that I am tempted to have my girlfriend open her own photo business.... Based on a lot of the "work" I see out there, she will knock 'em dead! (and I will second shoot for her!) lol!

First off, it's none of your business if I charged or not. For all you know, it could be portfolio work. Second, the middle one is my daughter which I took over two years ago. Third, my clients were perfectly happy and ecstatic which is what counts! And, last but not least, it's amazing at how rude some people can be when they believe they are the only one who is right. I don't mind critique, but to be so arrogant is outright horrid!

1. By posting a link to your website, you have invited us to view it.
2. Why post a two-year-old photo now?
3. Because clients are often ignorant of art, their approval does not necessarily mean much.
4. Please do not confuse candor and rudeness.
5. I am often the only one who is right.
6. You might as well get used to the fact that I am always right.

The first one looks like he's choking himself and isn't a flattering image of him at all. The second one looks cool (as in blue, not as in interesting- and that's for clarification not insult). But if you took the second 2 years ago why post it now for critique? You can't recapture it. (yes, you can learn from the feedback and shoot differently with someone else, but one would think to see pretty substantial differences in an image taken recently and one from two years ago, especially if you're posting here! Hopefully you're taking the time to see other peoples' critiques and learn from those as well, but it sounds like you're just getting offended and huffy). The third is a snapshot- doesn't look like any forethought went into it.

If you're charging people, you're presenting yourself as a professional. You need to be able to deliver professional results. You're making a name for yourself and what that name means to others is entirely up to you, but I don't see any images that I would use to promote my work with, and that's what you should be striving for with each shot- the best possible representation of your work.

I did get offended with the making fun of my work. I posted a few of my favorite portfolio shots to get feedback, not ridicule. You do not have to always "follow the rules" when it comes to art. That is what makes art interesting. I do apologize for becoming "huffy", but I am not one to ridicule others work; I try to point out anything I see that could be improved. However, in regard to cropping, to each his own with the "rules of photography" because not everyone is looking for the same ol' same ol'. I know the "rule of thirds" and I have been well schooled in composition, but I don't always "go with the grain". Know what I mean?

What I'm about to say, I mean constructively. However, I have a feeling you are going to take it personally. These are obviously professional and paid photographs, except for your daughter. The easiest way to tell this is by your reply.

That being said, they aren't very good. Mind you, I'm not saying my portrait work is any better... but I'm not charging people for mine yet. I won't charge until I feel that my work is competitive enough with others work to charge for it.

However, your reply towards others is a bit repulsive. It makes me not want to critique anymore. His reply was blunt, yes; but attacking? No.

Simply put, you just didn't like the fact that someone expressed that your work was "sub-par."

Now, if you want to be critiqued on the individual photos, I can do that for you, too.

1. He/she/it looks pissed off. There is emotion, but not the right emotion. The pose looks like a sad attempt for an entrance into Vogue magazine, the lighting is harsh, as with the shadows.
2. Underexposed, white balance is off, and zero processing was done to this image to correct either. It's noisy, and her eyes do not stand out. Lastly, although your daughter is very pretty, her arm pits are not. Toss that pose altogether. This should be the last time you ever use it. It's terrible.
3. The child would have been better off not smiling. Tones don't look bad, but the pose isn't that great either. He's not really expressing how much of a "fun time at play" he's actually having.
