why not just use a little soft box on for flash?

Big diffuser thing for giving a soft even light all over one plane of your subject:

Normally balanced with a smaller fill light to avoid shadows.

You can get similar things for flash guns, called flash diffusers:

However, for space/portability, brollies do the same trick as a softbox (nearly) and are lighter and give a bigger light source than a mini-flash diffuser.

I'd modify it to use a bigger umbrella. Then it could double as ...........an umbrella!
