What's new

Phew....just finished first session! CC

Perfect lighting, love all the shots. I don't mind tilting I thought #1 shouldn't be tilted but #2 the tilting is fine because the kid is kinda straight and is the focus point of the photo.

What camera, and setting did you use? I'm new and would love to take photo like that. The lighting is perfect.

these are REALLY good, #1,3 as well as 5 seem a tad overexposed. Overall these have alot of potential.

Yeah, great job over all.

But like everyone else...The "arsty" angle is fail.
You can make it work when the composition allows for it. Yours don't. You clipped fingers and slivers of heads, and there is really no reason for it. These crops seem totally arbitrary.

Read up on composition...then you will really be stellar!

It's not wrong to crop heads, and stuff, but it is very situation dependant.

Very well said. In my above post I didn't mention anything on the tilted images, because I was so caught up in how perfect the lighting is. Every now and then it could be ok, but in a series of images, it would get annoying very fast.

I'm not gonna lie, I really dig the not so perfect portrait look. chopping of heads, different angles, not so centered compostion....to me it gives character and uniqueness. But to each his own I suppose. I do appreciate the critiques.

Heres a few more that some of you may feel is better composition wise.

It also screams "amatuer".

I also tend to chop of slivers of heads...
I don't mind it, but I know others do, so now I make a point to get the entire head (if I can) in the picture and then I can at least crop later if I want.

Keep in mind matting and framing of an image, the matt overlaps the image, chopping off that much more.

Every photographer has their own style. I don't think doing something "against" the rules is amateur. I may be a beginner and not have all the knowledge but I know what my own "style" is. If thats not someone else's style then they don't have to ask me to do photos for them. I am not a fan of posed, centered, perfect little portraits. To me instead of screaming amateur is screams boring. Take awhile to browse different websites of photographers, there are plenty who chop heads, have off kilter angles...etc. I'm not looking to be by the books perfect. I want something different and unique to myself.

i agree 100%. Posed, centered portraits belong in schools and on drivers licenses. To me the best portraits are of natural activity.
By the way, #3...wow

I love that second shot, though wonder if a bit of a crop off the top would make it even better. The last in the first set and second are also very good.

The lighting is great! You did a wonderful job and I'm sure your client is pleased.

Tilting and cropping are all personal things, everyone is going to have opinions on what is right.
