Phishing with zip file attachments

Be aware that spammers are resurrecting the use of zipped files containing malware attached to emails.

I received two today, one that purported to be from a toll road agency and one that mimicked a Chase Manhattan notice remarkably well.

Are they obvious .zip files, or are they disguised as something more innocent, like .pdfs?

They are zips, in both the emails I received they were supposedly a receipt and a bill.

Gee, Lew....so I guess I shouldn't have clicked on that zip file that was supposedly from you but visiting Nigeria and promises of great wealth? Now you tell me...

Best not to open any attachment you were not expecting. If you're not sure, contact the purported sender directly to find out what's going on.

Funny, I read this earlier this morning, while still at home.
Then, just a few minutes ago, I got just such an email--to my work address.
It said, "The ACH transaction that you recently initiated has been rejected by the merchant.
Please click the file provided below to have more information about this problem."

Fortunately, I am quite the skeptic, so I don't tend to trust ANY file in an email unless I not only KNOW the sender, but know that they did, in fact, mean to send me a file.
I just forwarded this one on to our I.S. guys.

I'm totally skeptical of any file or link even from people I DO know. What with hackers able to crack into email accounts and send everyone in their address book a quick, "Hey, check this out! I think you'll like it (link or attachment here)!" I get those every once in a while even from people I know and trust.... and they don't have any clue their email has been hacked as they don't even show they've sent the email. It was all done at the internet provider level.

Yep. That's why I said I have to not only know the sender, I have to also know that an email is legitimate from THEM, not just their email address. If I'm not expecting a file from someone, I don't open it. I've been known to call or text my sister, my music minister and my friends and say, "did you really send me this email that says "…" and has a file attached to it? My music minister is REALLY bad to actually SEND emails purposely, with a link to some piece of music he wants to hear or a video of a song, and just put in the subject line "watch this" or "listen to this." Ummm…NO. Not without calling first to be sure he really did send that. I've told him before how often his emails look suspicious, but then he forgets and does it again.
