Photo editing software for newb

So I cant afford photoshop and iphoto doesnt allow me to compress photos to a smaller size, is there a photo editing software that is cheaper than photoshop and still decent? Any free downloads? Thanks, if this has been covered before, just point me to the thread. I wasnt sure what would have gotten me good results in the search. Thanks!

Did you have a look at Photoshop Elements (the current version is 7.0)? It is a simplified version of Photoshop but works well for photography. A free alternative is GIMP (Google it!).

Although also consider Paintshop Pro as well - retails at about the same rate as Photoshop elements.
