What's new

Photography Business

I am talking to someone with SCORE but he doesn't seem to be too helpful! I have also been actively looking for a photography mentor in my area but nothing has come through. I am really looking for feed back on my blog and what people think about that!

You have a long way to go before starting a business. I'm picking up some big problems, most predominetly with lighting. I wish I had a better word for it, but your lighting is poor.

This picture for example.... Not really sure what to say about this....

or this.....

Such poor lighting here that there is a TON of motion blur in the baby's hand

I am also seeing some pretty big problems with general composition....

This picture for example....
IMG_5479.JPG

There is a cheerleader jumping out of his head, and a leg coming out of her ass. Let alone, the mural is poorly cropped, a cheerleader is cut in half and the football player's head is cut off.

And here...

The whole grave marker isn't in the frame....

I honestly do appreciate all this! Keep it coming! I do understand these are the greatest photographs. However you do not know the circumstances I was under and requirnemts I had to follow in order to complete this project. Plus some of the stuff you said was negative about the photograph was intentional! All artists have different styles and opinions on what is right or not. Thanks though for your input

Artists have a high regard for their craft, and rarely make excuses for poor execution.
I get a sense that critique here will fall on deaf ears.

What is the reasoning behind the underexposed baby picture posted above?

No excuses. Honestly this was my first photography class in school a few months back of course not everything is going to be perfect. No reasoning, just an honest mistake. I was talking about the hand movemment. In each photograph we have to do everything manually so I in the first on I could not get enought lighting and minimize movement at the same time. So that is the best I knew how to do. I think I'll remove the last one you questioned about, I do have better ones.

Please don't try to judge me by assuming I do not listen to what is said. You do not know me!

Low light you could have used a tripod. higher ISO, lower aperture. to solve any number of problems. The point of photography is to learn to overcome what ever the situation throws at you!

Pick one of those images and decide what you think are wrong with them and what you think are right then ask questions. Dont ever take anything personal, and you can learn from all the comments!

Honestly I think you have a long way to go and need to learn alot more about exposure.

Can I ask, what is the "style" you are going for?

Both coments well taken. I totally agree and seperting photography and business! That is the problem I am having! I have been a photographer for about 10years but know nothing about running a business. I have ahad costumer service jobs but nothing high up!

Ok not trying to bust your balls/chops here but if you have been a photographer for 10 years you wouldn't make mistakes like this would you. And if you have been a photographer for ten years we expect much better than this.

Would it be better to say you have been interested in photography for ten years and am now going to school for it. Then we know where to set the bar for your level of expertise. There is no shame in just learning but you must walk before you can run and you have a long way to go before your ready for the marathon. Sorry.

I'll apologize, because I only know as much about you from what you have said. You said you have been a photographer for 10 years. Now that I understand you are actually new, and taking classses, I will judge your images and statements accordingly.

I recommend you continue to post photos here for critic, particularly in areas you would like help in. Also, read many of the other threads here from people looking for critique. You could learn a lot around here pretty quickly.

Yes interested with a few photography jobs and no profesional training until now. No apologizes necessary. It's good to see what everyone actually thinks besides people around me just saying yea it's good without knowing what they are talking about. I know I have alot to learn and hopefully I'll be able to show ya'll something better in the near future!

Thanks I will do that!

One thing we know for sure, you are going to get better.

Forget about the business for now. Sharpen your skills first. Build a good portfolio and go from there. Good luck!

Thanks for everything I asked for!

Ya'll should follow my blog so you can help me improve there. All assignments are going up there for people like you! Peers and instructors are too affraid to hurt your feelings, Bring it on! lindseydrury. blogspot. com

Personally, I don't follow blogs.
If you want help here, post here.

Best way for you to learn is to read, practice, read and practice some more. Then take your best shots and post 2 or 3 of them here. People here won't remember to go to your blog. Post some up for critique or if you think your close and can't put your finger on it just ask. Be patient and put your big girl/boy pants on because people on the internet are harsh, truthful and sometimes mean. Think Simon Cowell. But for the majority of them they know what there talking about. Don't get offended. Your not going to see them on the street. Just accept what they say, learn from it and keep taking more pictures.

You'll be surprised what a community like this can bring to your photography. In a good way.

network in you local community
offer interesting & value oriented services / products
make your clients ultra-happy and they will multiply
best of luck!
