While I may have picked up a photography based magazine now and then to see what's in it, I learned the not-so-hard way nearly 50 years ago about stereo equipment, and learned again with PC computer magazines about 30 years ago, is to avoid them.
In short, there may be one or two "useful" articles in such magazines. Most of these articles are geared toward novices, and can provide a good help. But as I transitioned from simple point and shoot to full DSLR capability, it was this web site and others like it that I could browse as desired to find real solutions that work. One of the advantages to 'trolling' here is there is no vendor-specific bias other than one author likes Canon and another likes Nikon, for example. In the magazine world, the 'shootouts' and 'comparisons' they do frequently favor whoever does the most advertising in that magazine. No business will survive long by shooting down its customers equipment.
In short, read what's in this forum. There's far more real help than 'hot air' in this forum and others. And it doesn't cost a thing!
