Photoshop Workspace help

So somehow the area around the image or file I work on is always grey, but last week Im sure I did something to mask it black

example

the selection is the entire image but all around it its black, its making me crazy because with some images I cant tell which part to edit, etc. Ideas?

Edit -> Preferences -> Transparency & Gamut

just right click the grey/black/whatever color it is to change it

At least by doing what tirediron suggested, you might become more familiar with ALL the preference settings thus learning a bit more about Photoshop than just right clicking on the background.
