Anyone have any tips on doing a black background behind a dog or cat and making the animal disapear into the black in photoshop?

Get a black sheet and put it behind the dog or cat while shooting.

If you are using flash as your primary light source, move the flash in close and turn the poewr down so you get a narrow depth of light.

If you've gotta do it in Photoshop, draw a rough selection around the animal, feather it heaps and then decrease the brightness of everything but the animal. the Burn tool might be handy there as well.

Hi Bekaphoto, I guess if you knew how you wouldn't be asking. I'm not sure that I understand you question though.

Do you want to feather the edges of your subject to have them be indistinct or are you trying for some type of animation?

btw, if you really are wondering about how to darken the background (relatively speaking of course) while still having your subjects exposed properly here is a place you can go... http://www.geofflawrence.com/photography_tutorial_inverse_square_law.htm
