I actually don't mind the high contrast blown out back lighting of the first two, but they're not in focus at all. The 3rd I'm not really enjoying the dark shadows all over her and I would crop more on the left. She's very cute. Did you get any similar to 1 and 2 that might be in focus?

Also was this just natural light? I would have exposed less and used a bit of fill to balance the light. I did say I like that look but it is a little too much. The brightness in the sky takes your eye away from the baby.

the resizing on here makes the images look a bit softer then they are. But one is kinda soft and dreamy intentionally. On two i wasnt going for a soft feel. The client like two and is using it for advertising on their site: cupcakes & kisses. All natural lighting. Dont have any speed lights yet. I wanted them somewhat overexposed. I was trying to get the glow from the sunset.

Well they look unintentionally blurry. Again, I see what you were going for with the dreamy lighting, but like in #1 her face is washed out and sky is so bright. If you could burn it in a bit and maybe try to add a bit of contrast to her face in PP it might help.

Only #1 was intentional. I had other shots that came out sharper but i dig this one and it was not for the end client. Just having some fun and being a bit artsy. #2 was not intentionally soft. I think I was up a little too close with my 50mm. Dad was holding her up to get the shot and I was trying not to get any of him in the shot. So maybe some focal length issues or a bit of motion blur. Im thinking focal length probably. Ill keep your tips in mind for our next shoot. She's a busy baby.

If you shoot someone that close, dont worry about opening the aperture wide open. Shoot it at f/4 or f/5.6, you background will still be blurry when the background is that far. Especially if you use longer zoom and compress the background.

I had to learn to stop down my aperture! I alsways tried to shoot wide open in order to get the blurry background, which I was getting, but my subjects were always soft. Since I've stopped down a couple notches, I no longer have the issue, and I no longer am pulling my hair out because my images are coming out MUCH sharper!

Disclaimer: If I'm using the terminology wrong, its because I'm still learning the Photography lanuage.

Im wondering where the disconnect is occuring here.

#1 Adults don't move around as much a young child does. #2 - I find that the sweet spot for my lens is normally 1-3 stops from the highest f stop (each lens is different). That doesn't mean I don't shot with the highest f stop my lens can muster at times, I just know when I do getting nice sharp focus might not happen.
