Welcome to both TPF and Photography. I am sure you will enjoy both. Now to your pics. I am learning as well so accept my critique with that in mind.

#1. Based on the depth of field (DOF) it is difficult to determine your subject. One might think the flower in the foreground would be since it is the object most in focus. However, the "It's a Boy" may have been what you were after. Keep your DOF in mind when composing a shot and adjust your f/stop accordingly.

#2. This is a different concept. I think it could work but there are a few elements that distract.
a. The spit in the wood... Not much you can do there. It is what it is.
b. upper right corner has a blade of grass. try cropping this out.
c. Lower right corner a fence post and maybe a twig are creeping in. This could be cropped out with the same crop as mentioned in "b."

#3 I like this one but it is a little blown out in the bottom middle. You might try exposing for it and see what would happen. Not sure if that would work or not.

#4,6 and 7 are the best of the bunch. Not feeling much in #5.

Next time keep it to 3 or 4 images. It is much easier to critique fewer photos.

Keep up the good work and keep having fun.

^Thanks for the input. I'll make sure and post less pictures next time, just got a little excited.lol :D

the View NX2 (CD that comes with your camera) is a good resource. You can edit RAW photos there but the best part about it.....it shows you your focus points. It's helped me learn how to focus better - it will only help if you don't shoot in the auto modes like portrait, macro, etc.

Why does everyone say look at the CD, I'm pretty sure my 3100 didn't come with one :(

To op: I like #4 the best, not sure why. Camera tilt and the apeture I think. #3 would have been a winner too if you could get rid of the background garbage and catch more of the grass in frame.

It should've came with 3 CDS. Nikons point and shoots come with 2 CDs so im pretty sure the d3100 did. One is a manual (they don't give you the full paper manual) and the other CD is editing/viewing software
