Picture modes on DSLR's

Hi everyone,


Just curious as to if anyone actually uses the picture modes in-camera effects? I.E. Vivid, Neutral, etc.

I do. If I'm shooting a subject specifically for colour I often switch it to "Vivid" but I rarely, if ever, switch to "More Vivid" - it's a little too vivd for my liking.

I did on my Nikon D70...the Direct Print option created pretty decent JPEGs.

I have used all of them, just to see what they did to an image. The in-camera HDR is best because it produces an image that does not go over the top, like some post HDR images.

I toyed with a few when I first got my D7000. Then never bothered with 'em.

Yeah, I've only used the 'vivid' and 'monochrome' mode. Other than mono, I don't think I'll be using them much. I like the HDR mode, but I'm still reading up on the use of it.

I use them all of the time. I shoot Raw+ Fine so the setting only apply to the Jpegs. I call it preprocessing in that when you learn how they work you can do about anything with them. Just takes some practice, and having it in your mind what you want from a scene/subject. If you screw the pooch too much in the settings you then have the RAWs to fall back on. I am down to not having to do any post work on 60 to 70% of my photos, the other it us usually some Levels adjustment, and brightness/contrast. I have always liked shooting over the processing work, that has carried over from my film days.

On few occasions I do monochrome. Got hired for a wedding (5 photogs, two of which had to produce b/w images). The owner of the studio told us that we should choose who did what. My self and another photographer were shooting BW. Studio was happy, spent much less time editing, we were happy (delivered the cards and got paid).
Similar thing we used to do during film days - shoot asa 800 film med. format.

It really depends on your workflow and what you want out of the camera.

Those who are generally editing the results and often shooting in RAW will tend to select the most neutral settings so that the histogram on the camera LCD for review reflects the most faithful likeness for the exposure before its edited or adjust.

Those who are performing little to no editing often tend to shift to using the picture modes more so as they tweak the general cameras output to a level which is most pleasing to their eye or which reduces their generally performed editing steps in the camera itself.


There is, of course, no perfect right way, but they are there as an optional element to be used for either of the two more extreme examples and all those that fit inbetween.

In my own case I don't use them, since I'm prepared and have time to edit the RAWs I take I stick to keeping any in-camera adjustments to a minimal value.

There is also an adjustable HDR setting in SCENE MODE but without the tone map.

Yeah, I have that on my A33. Also like the DRO.
