Laura and Gracie - Piggy Back
by Peter_939, on Flickr

Hi All,

This picture is of my Girlfriend and Niece having a piggy back ride. A few comments on Flickr indicate the contrast between the two hair colours isn't "right" for the photo. I have no idea how to fix this though (if indeed it can be fixed - Currently dont have photoshop)

Any other comments would also be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Pete

Personally I think it would be a lot more interesting if you could see their faces. Just judging THIS photo, I would say its just "ok" to me. I cant really put my finger on it, maybe someone else can help out more.

There is no eye contact.... nothing really to catch a viewers attention.

Thanks guys - Do you think this makes a better picture?

I am trying to get a set of four (rest on flickr) to print to tell the story of my nieces adventure (on way to the tower - at the tower door - shouting at the tower - and then finally leaving when nobody was home)

Once again, I'll play "dissenting opinion". I think the first image the stronger of the two, BUT... the exposure is hosed; you have blown highlights on the hair and skin and loss of detail in the clothing. Had you used a diffuser image left, OCF or reflector image right, or even done a two-exposure HDR, and NOT cut off the child's boots, this would ahve been a great image. The second one is nice enough, and would have been all the better had it been shot in portrait aspect without all the wasted space.

Thanks for your comments! I am sure my Niece will be up for another adventure soon (she loved it!) so will have lots of opportunity to improve!

The kid's outfit looks weird. I expect that it's velvet, but it looks kind of like latex. Which would be just wrong.

I think they're both pretty strong images, but of quite different types. There's nothing wrong with photographing from behind, some very very good images have been made of people from behind, they're just a different thing than photographs of people looking at the camera which are in turn a different thing from photographs of people with visible eyes that are looking somewhere not the camera.

It is indeed Velvet (well I think it was - certainly not Latex :P)
