Pileated Woodpecker

[Tuckerjr]

As I prepared to lead a bird walk for the Wildflower Pilgrimage in the Smoky Mountains this Pileated flew in about 10-15 yards from my spot. I was lucky enough to have my D500 with the 200-500 mounted on the tripod ready to go.

I love these guys. They are fairly elusive in my neck of the woods - I can hear them around, but rarely catch a sight of them. Good job grabbing the quick shot like this - good DOF and nice position of the bird. They're quick when they're out there grubbing!

Nice work!

I don't even attempt a shot from a tripod. By the time I'd get it remotely close, the subject would be off to the next tree.
