Plane spotting @JNB

Hey there, this is my first post out here so please be kind! =)

The thing is, I just started taking pictures with a D5000 which happens to be my first DSLR, after reading a couple books and articles I started taking manual shots, I'd like to get some feedback on this shot so I can understand where I need to improve, there it goes:

You could have waited until one plane is on the track and fully available in light; as of now, this image is problematic

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the delay, I was kinda late so I had to rush to my boarding gate so I couldn't wait for the ideal moment. I see no color in my shots, is it me or they look like a cellphone pics ?
