Title: Play

red-fox-145.jpg

Location & Date: Waterton Valley Overlook, Waterton National Park | July 2014

Camera Set-Up: Nikon D800 w/ Nikon 70-200 at 200mm

Shutter Speed: 1/640

Aperture: 2.8

ISO: 1600

Note:

I took 15,000 images in the summer of 2014 – and almost 10,000 of the images were of this fox family in Waterton. The incredible vixen and her three surviving kits offered an insight into animal behaviour and emotion. Of the many images from this shoot, this one is far from being the most technically sound shot. But I love it. It reminds me of playing games with my dog, Timber. It perfectly encapsulates a sequence that can only be described as pure joy. And it demonstrates the importance of play to wild animals in learning critical survival skills – or, in this case, the importance of play to settle a score between siblings, one of whom refused to let the other sleep.
