If you shoot through the umbrella and keep it closer doesnt that make it softer than moving in back. Thats what we were taught anyways. Closer and larger the modifier=softer more even light.

Hum, yes I learned that too. so is the light just too bright? or should I move it closer? lol can't wait to play more.

I think I remember Derrel saying Camera level. I have heard that desirable catch lights are supposedly 10 and 2 position. But play around. You can always dial down the power of the flash if your getting hot spots.
