Please help me get to the bottom of grainyness in this picture

Just bought a G1 but am getting grainy pictures. I am enclosing the link to a sample picture. In this one, the background was a not evenly lit. Some part of the background had shadow and I am wondering if thats whats causing the grainyness or is it the camera settings?

What Vince said plus the bright spots are light coming in from the window to the left. It is not the equipment.

Welcome to the limitations of your camera.

As said, high iso, lower light = grainy.
