Another suggestion for under US$500 would be the Nikon P510 which would be one of Nikon's top of the line compact cams.
Based on the things you need:
It has a continuous burst mode of 7 frames per second.
1920x1080 full HD video at 30 frames per second.
ISO100-3200 (with a Hi setting of ISO6400)
and you have a lot of flexibility in terms of adjusting exposure (as well as learn a lot from this camera) with modes like Aperture priority auto and Shutter priority auto for that DSLR feel.
You also get some bonuses like a:
Viewfinder (Digital)
16.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
GPS (for geotagging)
Flipout screen (can be both an advantage or disadvantage)
Manual White Balance adjustment
42x optical Zoom, NIKKOR Extra Dispersion glass lens with Vibration Reduction (very impressive zoom with very impressive glass and very impressive VR for less shakey shots)
It might be a disadvantage for you if you prefer traditional cameras that are rectangle-sized. This one takes the shape of a dslr (but smaller of course).
