I agree on the single point focus. That's what I'm using most of the time. Now for sports as well. Way more keepers that way.
I have been practicing re-focusing fast as well, for more keepers.
@shawdowlands I have a Nikon D5600 and want to use either kit lens for gymnastics (indoor) .... you feel the single spot focus is the way to go? I have been trying 9 to get the whole gymnasts body clear and having a lot —- lot, of trouble! Well there is about 50 problems but this may help at least take it down to 49! Lol!!!!!

I've had more success with single focal point, shooting sports. I tried 9 and for me, it would skip off of my subject and unto another player, etc...
So lately, I've been trying single point, and occasionally re-focus.
