I didn't mean for the auto focus, I meant it as regards the shutter speed.

Then again; if for some reason the camera cannot settle on focus due to camera shake, then it might very well be camera shake that is causing the focus problem.

Anyway, it sounds as if you are methodical in your procedure, so check everything, one thing at a time, and try to eliminate one thing before going on to another thing.

I agree on the single point focus. That's what I'm using most of the time. Now for sports as well. Way more keepers that way.
I have been practicing re-focusing fast as well, for more keepers.

@shawdowlands I have a Nikon D5600 and want to use either kit lens for gymnastics (indoor) .... you feel the single spot focus is the way to go? I have been trying 9 to get the whole gymnasts body clear and having a lot —- lot, of trouble! Well there is about 50 problems but this may help at least take it down to 49! Lol!!!!!

I've had more success with single focal point, shooting sports. I tried 9 and for me, it would skip off of my subject and unto another player, etc...
So lately, I've been trying single point, and occasionally re-focus.

The OP might find this useful: DSLR Autofocus Modes Explained

I learned my Canon 20D from Ken Rockwell's excellent how-to, and he suggested leaving it in “AI Focus AF” ("AF-A" on Nikon) and that has served me well... I think.

Still a n00b, so I'm still figuring it all out, myself :)
