Please help with camera purchase guide

Could it be self timer mode? I know it is usually 10 secs on the canons, right...
5 secs seems short for that...

It could be that it's a 7 year old digital camera... I mean, yeah, it may be a little user error, but with how much progresswe make EACH year, 7 of them must put that camera pretty far behind. It might be time for an upgrade regardless. I say the Canon A720. Image stabilization, 8MP, 2.5 inch LCD screen, 4 times OPTICAL zoom, and $170. It's perfect.

1. Its not 7 years old, it's 5 years old.
2. It was the fastest P&S of it's time and still is near the top. Half the A720's shutter lag.
3. The DSC-V1 has 4x Optical as well.
4. The DSC-V1 has a hot shoe. Does the A720 have one?

Well Iam not home yet. I am out of town for work but as soon as I get home this Friday I will test out some different settings. I appreciate all the advice and oppinions. I will be continuing to view these forums.

Ok I am home and tried out the setting prefered here. There are a few more things I want to ask to make sure this is correct and maybe you guys know what they mean. Currently I placed my dial to S changed the yellow number to 200. I removed the red eye reduction. Here are some more things on the screen

1. +2.0EV
2. F2.8
3. A flower looking symbol
4. SAF

The other icons I know what they mean. But does the above mentioned sound like they are correct? I also found a very helpful guide here. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/V1/V1P.HTM

ok, +2.0 EV is something called exposure compensation, its either manual or automatic and if an image is too dark or too light it substitutes by darkening (-#) or lightening (+#) usually they go in .5s, so .5, then 1, 1.5, 2, etc
F2.8 is called the F-stop number, or Aperture, and it determines how wide the shutter opens, the lower the number, the wider the opening, and this determines how much light makes it to the camera
a flower looking symbol is probably the macro symbol, basically for close-up shots
SAF sounds familiar to me but im drawing a blank, sorry
but the +2.0EV seems right, the F2.8 seems right, but not the macro symbol, check the manual to figure out how to take this setting off
