I know this is a silly question, cause none of you were there to see these cakes. They cakes were bright, but the pictures show them VERY bright. I shot in auto (mostly cause I can't use my camera, so in order to at least think I will have something to look at later, i shoot in auto)..

here are the cakes..

Yes, one is a bit over and the other is a bit under.
There's nothing wrong with Auto, PSA are auto modes, as long as you know how to readjust or compensate when there's a need.
Now, when you say
They cakes were bright, but the pictures show them VERY bright
What do you mean by that? Were they bright when you just saw them b/c of the room ambient light? or were they bright on LCD screen?

See, I am wondering if there is something wrong with my camera. Often I will take a picture and I like the loud bright colors, but really to the naked eye, they colors are not that bright. I saw what they looked like on the LCD screen, and I knew it wasn't really what the cakes looked like..

Does that make sense?

You have a 7D and your using Auto? Thats your problem. Take the time to learn how to use it!!!

Gee that is helpful, we all had to start somewhere. This is a beginners forum is it not?

It looks like you used a flash on the first and not on the second.

Did you buy your camera new? or used

Yeah, that was all kinds of helpful.

I will be the first to admit, THIS IS WAY TOO MUCH CAMERA FOR ME! At times I HATE that it's "smarter" than me.

I bought this camera over a year ago new.

Other than the token, learn to use it.. Do you think it's broken too?

Nah I dont think it broken. That camera is not too much for you but you do need to learn a few options on it to help your photography.

The pictures are good and clear but they are a little over saturated with color and have a shallow Depth of Field

How did you light the cakes..........nice cakes by the way

No, I think the camera is fine. Sometimes the in camera light meter is not what you want. That where you need to think.

Since these are cakes and aren't going anywhere, what you could do next time is turn the dial to "P". Take a picture, and take a look at it. If you feel it is too bright, adjust the compensation down a few stops (turn the dial so that instead of being centered, the marking is to the left a bit). Do the opposite if the original picture is too dark.

Hope that helps a bit :)

^ sorry for the wonderful English. It's late, and my verbalization skills aren't at their best... Nor are my typing skills.

I think the second one is OK! compared to the first one in terms or the amount of exposure..
i would maybe just suggest to try shooting it from another angle and to be careful from distracting elements...
well done :)

You didn't shoot in auto... you shot in program. Exif says so. Also, flash fired on the first and not the 2nd. For that to have happened, you manually popped up the flash for one and closed it for the other.

That said.. these would be nice photos if you put a big piece of white construction paper or something behind the cupcakes. The background is very distracting.

Seems like it's been a year and you haven't learned anything about the DSLR you own, or you're messing with us.. who knows. I think it's funny how you always ask if it's broken and you must know by now that all of us are ready to jump out of our skins because we wish we had your 7D (ok, maybe not the newbies). Not trying to be mean... but W T F

makes sense? Somewhat somewhere prop not :)
check the screen brightess and of course CALL CANON

This is what Im thinking. You had your flash up and ready to go and it flashed on cake one but on two you focused on a lighter area in the scene such as the base and the flash didnt go. The lighting is ample enough in the room that the flash according to that camera wasn't necessary depending on area of focus. Thats my theory, did you use a tripod?
I would also check your camera's manual to see if you have set the color/exposure settings in the camera.
And lastly do you shoot in raw or jpeg?
