Lighting came out pretty good with just a flash. At least IMO.

The lighting is ok, but my eyes keep going to the background to see what's there - taking away from the main subject.

Do either of these work better? I cloned out the dead leaf in one and cloned in some back ground in the other. I think my cloning needs work.

Your clonning needs some work. You can see exactly where the pattern repeats.
