poor man's/women's 70-200mm telephoto??

Currently saving for a nikkor 70-200mm 2.8G lens. The way things are going, this could turn out to be a lengthy wait. In the interim,
could one use a 105mm 2.8g with a Nikkor AF-S TC-20E 2X III teleconverter? And expect near results that of the 70-200mm lens?

No because the 2x teleconverter cuts 2 stops of light through you lens so you lens effectively becomes f5.6

People keep telling me that the Tamron 70-200mm is amazing optically. It just has really slow focus. If that isn't a deal breaker I would suggest that.

I would agree with the 80-200/2.8 2-ring.

On the other hand, if you want to wait for a cheaper alternative, Tokina will be releasing a 70-200mm F/4 with vibration control AND silent motor. I'm not familiar with their terms for these, but it will have them nonetheless. Should be a spectacular lens to go along with Tokina's other fantastic releases.

You can save even more $$$ by getting a Nikon AF 80-200 f/2.8 push-pull instead of the 2-ring. They still have great optics.
