Portrait "Effects"

Hey everyone! I am not necessarily a new photographer but have a question that might seem a bit basic. I am recently taken up "Senior Portraits" for some kids in high school. For one of the pictures I took just an ordinary "yearbook" style photo. One of the parents requested that I try some "different effects".

So my question is this: Are there any effects that you use on your portrait photos?

I'll say that OnOne Photo Tools and Photo Frame can make interesting effects absurdly quick and easy.

effects on the yearbook photo? don't schools want a classic looking photo for the yearbook?

Thats exactly what I thought. Maybe I'll see what they think of a black and white one? I really have no idea what else I would do. Im thinking that they want something that doesnt look like a yearbook photo?
