They look pretty good but I'm not sure I like the shadows on the wall behind.

It's looks almost like a messed up double exposure ghost image. Especially with the light pointed up and the shadows up higher on the wall.
 
It's a great start - well done Santino.

Are they related?

They are very good shots. The shadows have been mentioned, but I actually like and use shadows a great deal. If done correctly the can be a great asset to a photo. Have a look at some of Alfred Steiglitz's photos and use of shadows in portraits.

To my eye what seems to be missing in both is a more expanded grey scale. You have great white's and blacks but the middle ground to get from one to the other seems to be lacking. IMO.
