I've read some of the posts about shooting later in the afternoon which I usually do anyways, however I seem to be having trouble finding the best ways to pose people without having a ton of shadows on their faces. I usually just shoot my son, but I'm starting to have friends want pictures of their kids. If I mess up a picture of my kid it's ok we just go outside the next day and try again but I won't have that kind of flexibility with my friends kids and would like to make sure I don't screw them up.

Or should I just try using my flash to fill in the light where it's missing? I have an sb-600 I just haven't practiced using it much.

Thanks!

The TTL-BL setting on the SB-600 is specifically intended for use on back lit subjects. Even better, is if you get the SB-600 off the camera and the lens axis using CLS to control and trigger the speedlight.

An alternative is to chose the location and camera perspective so the subject is not back lit.
