This is a straight forward case of pushing technology to its limits. The JVC Picsio is a very old, discontinued "camcorder" with limited dynamic range. If I used one of my more modern devices for this video, it would have turned out more "ordinary", but this video was the result of pushing this device beyond its normal range:
