I've also got a second idea for this shot. Could you crop it into portrait orientation, placing the firefighters in the bottom right corner of the frame, eliminating everything but them and the smoke?

That's pretty humbling really. Reminds me of pictures of the Victoria Bushfires I saw a while back, this picture gives me a similar feeling as those did.
