Predictive color temperature model

How do you account for large scale phenomena, such as the eruption of volcanoes? For years after Mt. St. Helens erupted, I remember that there were consistently dramatically different colored skies and sunsets than normal.

As far as I know, there aren't too many of those events in the past several years, so those effects should be minimal. I would think pollution would have a much larger and "real" effect than phenomena like volcanoes.
